The games actually came out first! The original Pokemon games, Pokemon Red and Green, launched in Japan back in 1996. The Pokemon Trading Card Game didn't make its debut until later, in October 1996 in Japan. So, the world of pocket monsters started on the Game Boy before it hit the playground as cards.
