Nope, WiFi's not needed. Played it on a 6-hour flight with airplane mode on. Zero interruptions except for the flight meals.

Gonna disagree with the crowd here - having WiFi does make it easier for updating the game or buying stuff in-game. But to just play? Nah, not necessary.
