The cows in Stardew Valley should return to the barn on their own by 6 PM if you've left the barn doors open during the day. Just make sure to close the barn doors at night to protect them from wolves!

Just open the barn door, they know the way back. If they don't, maybe it's a bug.

Don't sweat it too much, if your cows are outside and it's getting late, they'll mosey on back into the barn themselves as long as the door's open. No herding needed! If it's closed, though, you'll have to push 'em in manually the next day.

Actually, I find it easier to just leave the barn doors open 24/7. Cows get themselves in and out, and I've never had an issue with wolves.

Pro tip: build a fence around your barn with a gate. Open the barn doors in the morning, open the gate, then close the gate at night after the cows are back inside. This keeps them safe and sound without micromanagement!
