So here's a tip from my experience - make sure you've got Prime Status. It significantly improves the quality of drops you get. Plus, participating in the Official Competitive, Wingman, and Danger Zone modes seem to give better drops than the casual modes. And yeah, keep an eye out for special events; that's where the sweet loot is at.
