Gonna disagree with the hype here. The Cryolator is cool and all, but it's more of a novelty weapon than a practical one. Ammo for it is super scarce and you're likely to ditch it for something with more common ammo before long. Neat to have, but not a game-changer.

Highly recommend getting the Cryolator early on. I picked the lock to get it right after leaving the vault and it made the initial hours of the game a breeze. Just watch your ammo and save it for the big baddies!
