I tried this myself and it's a no-go. Your best bet is using a Bluetooth-compatible controller like the newer Xbox controllers.

Just to add, Xbox One and Series X/S controllers work perfectly with iPads because they have Bluetooth. No fuss!

Nope, Xbox 360 controllers don't connect natively to iPads. You'd need extra adapters and it's honestly easier to use an Xbox One or Series X/S controller!
