Totally! When you die, you drop some items, and you can go back to retrieve them. Just try not to die again in the process!
Yes, you can! After you die, you respawn at your last save point, and you can usually find your dropped items close to where you bit the dust. Just make a beeline for your last known location and grab your stuff!
From my experience, it's definitely possible to get your stuff back. I died near a Leviathan once, and trust me, it was a heart-pounding adventure to get my gear back. Worth it though!
