Check your in-game settings to see if you're set to Offline mode. I had this issue once, tweaked my settings back to Online, and bam, it worked.

Sometimes it's a server issue. Just wait a bit and try again later. It happens to the best of us!

Make sure your friend's username is correct and they're not in a mission or offline. Sometimes a restart can fix it too!

Try logging out and back in or verifying the game files. It often resolves random connectivity problems.
