You can start with MKX and still enjoy it! MK9 is awesome, but MKX works perfectly fine as a standalone experience.

Nah, you don't HAVE to play MK9 before jumping into MKX. Each game has its own story mode and jumping straight into MKX won’t leave you too lost!

Speaking from experience, MKX does a good job of updating you on key events from MK9. But hey, if you have time, MK9 is a blast too!
