You only need Xbox Live Gold if you're planning to play MW3 online multiplayer. If you're sticking to the campaign mode, you don't need it.

Just want to play the single-player campaign? No Xbox Live required! But for online multiplayer, you'll need Xbox Live Gold.

If you're looking to play Modern Warfare 3's online multiplayer, then yes, you need Xbox Live Gold. But for the campaign, nope, you're good to go without it!
