Nah, you don't need foundations, but they do make your base more stable. Plus, they give you a nice flat surface to build on!
Foundations aren't necessary, but they do increase your base's structural integrity, which is super important if you don't want it flooding!
I tried building without foundations once. My base collapsed faster than a souffl茅 in a hurricane. Trust me, use 'em.
