You don't need Xbox Live to enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2's single-player campaign. However, if you want to hop into Red Dead Online and experience the multiplayer aspect, you will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

I've been playing RDR2 for quite a while now. The single-player mode works without Xbox Live, but for Red Dead Online, you'll definitely need Xbox Live Gold. Trust me, it's worth it for the multiplayer fun!
