Don't waste your time plundering, focus on quests and events instead. They pay off better in the long run.
Mine gold from resource tiles, trade in the Alliance Market, or complete daily quests. Easy peasy!
I've found success by upgrading my gold mines and raiding barbarian camps. You get valuable loot plus a decent amount of gold.
