Don't bother, just build around the stumps. They don't grow back anyway and make for great natural decorations!
In my experience, it's all about the chainsaw - you'll clear those pesky stumps in no time. Just hold down the attack button and watch them vanish!
Equip your axe (or chainsaw if you have it) and just keep chopping at the tree stump until it finally breaks apart. Easy peasy!
