How OP can you make Melee in Terraria?

Honestly, melee can be OP but it's all about how you use it. I've decked out my character per the meta - best armor, nasty weapons, the whole nine yards - but if you don't dodge or use your accessories and potions smartly, you'll still find yourself respawning. A lot. It's not just the gear, it's the player.
