Simply open a game with your friend, and tap the 'messages' icon in the bottom right corner. Voila, you can chat!

Click on the chat bubble icon at the bottom of the screen when you're in a match. Then you can type away!

From personal experience, the chat option pops up as soon as you start a new game. Look for the little bubble icon!
