Once you hit Chapter 7, you'll meet a tavernkeeper who can give you hints about your convictions. Before that, you're flying blind, so make the choices that feel right!

Personal experience here: I didn鈥檛 even realize you could check until the tavernkeeper mentioned it in Chapter 7! So, don't stress too much before then, just go with your gut.
