First, make sure you have the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows software installed. Once that's set up, open the Xbox Guide by pressing the big Xbox button in the center of the controller—voila, the battery status should pop up on screen!

I always just use rechargeable batteries and swap them out. Much easier than fiddling with software, IMHO.
