First, remove the battery pack and any batteries. Use a Q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts. Let it dry completely before reassembling!

Douse a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol, gently clean the contacts, let it air dry. Works like a charm for me every time!
