Honestly, just use Facebook. It's way easier to sync up with friends that way and you get to see their high scores and compete. Plus, everyone's on it.
I actually found a workaround by creating a group chat where we share our high scores and challenges. It's not in-game, but it keeps the competition and fun going among us!
