How to Destroy a Demon Altar in Terraria
Just hit it with a hammer, but not any old hammer. You need the Pwnhammer you get from beating the Wall of Flesh. Careful though, smashing them curses your world with more corruption and spawns new enemies!

Pro tip: Don't even think about smashing a Demon Altar before defeating the Wall of Flesh. You'll just end up decorating the floor with your insides. Get the Pwnhammer first, then go on a demolition spree!
Simple - grab your Pwnhammer or any harder hammer and give that Demon Altar a good whack! You'll find Pwnhammers in the Wall of Flesh's treasure bag after you defeat it. Each time you destroy an altar, more hardmode ores will spawn in your world, but remember, breaking them also unleashes powerful enemies and corruption!
Honestly, why would you want to destroy a work of art? Demon Altars are pretty in their own spooky way. But if you must, make sure it's with a Pwnhammer post-Wall of Flesh victory. Adds a bit of challenge with every altar you smash.
