Just empty the chest first, then hit it with an axe or pickaxe. Boom! Gone. Make sure it's empty though, or its contents will vanish into the pixelated ether.
I spent ages wondering the same, then accidentally hit it with my axe when it was empty, and poof! It disappeared. So, yeah, that works.
Try talking to it nicely, maybe ask it to leave? JK, empty it and then hit it with an axe or pickaxe. Works every time.
