Honestly, I just aim for the shore and jump off before it crashes. Works about 80% of the time, but you might get wet!
From my experience, constructing a small harbor with wooden pilings helps a lot. Drive your boat in slowly and park parallel to the dock. Add some torches for a cool Viking aesthetic!
