From personal experience, press C to open the menu, go to 'ITEM', find your new weapon, select it, and choose 'USE'. Now you're ready to face those pesky monsters!

It's in the menu under 'ITEM'. Select the weapon and hit 'USE'. Done.

Open the menu by pressing C (or your console's equivalent). Go to 'ITEM', then select the weapon you want to equip, and choose 'USE'. Voilà, you’re armed and dangerous!
