To get Boss Keys in Sonic Generations, you need to complete three Challenge Acts in any era (Classic, Dreamcast, or Modern). Then, a Boss Key will appear near the entrance to the boss gate!

Just finish 3 challenges in each stage's era. Then you'll get a boss key automatically. Simple as that!

From my experience, you only have to get through three challenge acts in any era. After that, the boss key magically spawns near the boss gate鈥攅asy peasy!
