To unlock Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, you can either play through the World of Light adventure mode or complete classic mode with certain characters. Alternatively, you can fight in Smash mode matches until you encounter him as a challenger.

I unlocked Mewtwo by completing Classic Mode with a few different characters. It was a blast!

Just play VS matches! After a certain number of games, Mewtwo will pop up as a challenger. Beat him, and he's yours!
