Use a compass. You can craft one with iron and redstone. It always points north, making your life a lot easier!
Just keep an eye on the sun! It rises in the east and sets in the west, so if you face the sunrise, north will be on your left.
First-hand experience here: Crafting a compass is the best way. Saved me from getting lost so many times.
