If you don't want your friends to know you're online, just go to the settings menu, navigate to 'Privacy' settings, and set yourself as 'Away'.

From personal experience, you can just open the Friends List, click on the gear icon, and toggle 'Online Status' to 'Away'. Works like a charm!
