Pro tip: Build two walls with a gap for your gate, then add logs horizontally at the top and bottom. Use the 'C' button (on PC) to create the gate door. Surviving just got stylish.
Just chop down some trees and align the logs into walls, leave a space for a door, and boom, you got yourself a gate. Done and dusted.
You just need to leave a gap between two defensive walls and hit it with a door blueprint. Been doing it for ages, works like a charm!
