Just go to the game mode selection screen, choose 'Custom Options,' set a unique key, and you're all set for a private game with your friends.
To make a private lobby, select the game mode you want to play, then click on 'Custom Options' in the bottom right, enter a custom match key, and share that key with your friends!
Why bother with custom options? Just hit up the private party invite and enjoy the game without the crowd.
