I've built a few chimneys: make sure to put a 45-degree thatch roof above your fire and leave a small gap or hole for the smoke to escape. Just be sure to cover it a bit so rain doesn't put out your fire!

You don't really need a chimney. Just leave a hole in the roof!

The best way is to build a stone chimney stack with a gap at the top. I did this, and no more smoke inside my base!
