Firstly, ya gotta make sure your chest is empty - can't move it if it's holding your precious turnips. Right-click to open, shift+click to quick-move items to your inventory. Once it's empty, just whack it with your axe or pickaxe, and it'll pop right into your inventory, ready to be placed wherever you fancy.
