Don't forget you need a Wiimote. Wii U GamePads won't work for this one.
First-hand experience: I've played Brawl on my Wii U tons of times. Just switch to Wii Mode with the Brawl disc in, and it works perfectly!
You can play Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii U by accessing the Wii Mode. Insert your Brawl disc, and use a Wii Remote to navigate the game's menu. Also, Wii Pro Controllers work if you're not into the Wii Remote.
