I've done this a bunch of times. Make sure you鈥檙e in the game 30-60 minutes before it kicks off, then join the event playlist from the lobby. It鈥檚 usually called something like 'Live Event' or similar, so you can鈥檛 miss it!
Honestly, just get there early and join whatever special playlist they have. Fortnite makes it pretty foolproof.
