If you die, your backpack drops at the location where you met your untimely demise. Just head back there to recover it, but watch out for those pesky cannibals!
Craft and place a few storage containers around your base. This way, even if you die, you won't lose everything. It's like insurance but for your survival game!
From my experience, building multiple small outposts on the map helps. If you die, you always have a backup supply nearby. It's saved me more times than I can count.
