If you're playing on Xbox, look into the Xbox Cloud storage. It automatically backs up your save games if you have Xbox Live. Saved my skin more than once!
Honestly, just email the devs. Had a buddy lose his save, and they sorted him out faster than trying to mess with files on your own.
