Hit the retreat button on the bottom right during the campaign, or if you're in the middle of a battle, use the army panel to withdraw troops!
Just select your army and click the retreat button on the campaign map. In battles, use the withdraw command from the army panel.
Why retreat when you can fight to the bitter end? But if you must, just hit the retreat button on the campaign or use the withdraw command in battle.
