To save in Super Mario 64, simply collect a Power Star and then choose to save when the prompt appears. To exit the game, press the START button, then select 'Exit Course' if you're in a level, or 'Save and Quit' from the main menu.
As someone who recently finished the game (again), you just need to collect a star, save, and then pick 'Save and Quit' from the menu. Done and done!
Seriously, who even exits the game? Just save after grabbing a star and turn off your console.
