Lol just go to the pause menu, hit 'Friends', and 'Add Friend'. Type their name. Done. Why make it complicated?

Honestly, sometimes it feels easier to steal a jet in-game than navigate those menus. But yeah, pause menu > Friends > Add Friend. It's straightforward once you find it.
