I've set up tons of outposts, and my first tip is to choose strategic locations near resources or chokepoints. Sweep the clear area of zombies, and using your radio menu option, pay the Influence cost to secure it. It's like getting your own little zombie-free mini-haven!
Make sure you've got enough Influence points stacked up, wander up to the building, clear it out, and then go to town in the radio menu to establish your outpost. Easy-peasy.
Outposts are best used in areas with resources such as ammo or medicine nearby. Clear location, use radio, done deal.
