You can't spectate Splatoon 2 multiplayer unless you're participating in a Private Battle. In this mode, you can hop into the Spectator slot before the match starts and watch the ink fly!

Private Battles let you join as a spectator. Just be sure to leave some time to shift gears while watching these inklings! Battle on squiddos!
Spectating only works in Private Battles. Unfortunately, public matches don't have this feature. But hey, watching streams is always an option!
Good luck spectating a regular multiplayer match! You can only spectate Private Battles or by watching a friend stream. That's how the ink drips!
