You can go to settings, then open notifications and turn off 'People You May Know' and 'Pages You May Like' suggestions. Problem solved!
In my experience, regularly tweaking your ad preferences helps. Go to settings -> ads -> ad settings and customize what you see.
Can't stop the page suggestions completely, but you can always ignore them. Out of sight, out of mind!
