You can also place campfires, torches, and workbenches around your area. They create a no-spawn zone for mobs. Fire good, bad guys bad.
There’s not really a way to completely stop mobs from spawning everywhere. Just be ready to battle!
Planting lots of trees and placing structures close to each other seems to reduce mob spawns in my experience. Dense forests can be your best friend!
