Just adjust your privacy settings, especially under 'How People Find and Contact You.' It won't block them entirely but will reduce it.
Check your 'Friend Suggestions' settings. Turn off notifications for 'People You May Know.' Trust me, it works.
You can't really stop it entirely... it's Facebook's way of introducing friends of friends. Embrace the network, my friend!
