Check the item's description in your inventory; if it mentions being 'illegal' or has a warning about legal repercussions, it's contraband. Better stash those somewhere safe!
Keep an eye out for a 'black market' tag in your item info. Anything with that tag is a big, fat contraband. Avoid the trouble and leave it behind.
In the game, just look out for anything that gives off shady vibes or has a warning label. If it feels illegal, it probably is!
