Just hold down the Guide button (the big X in the middle) for a few seconds, then select 'Turn off controller' in the menu. Easy peasy!

Press and hold the Guide button for about 3 seconds until the power-off menu appears. Trust me, it works like a charm every time.

If your console is off, you can just wait about 15 minutes, and the controller will turn off by itself. Patience is a virtue!
