I always do it by going to Settings on the home screen, selecting Accessibility, and turning on the Captions mode.
Just press the * button on your Roku remote during playback. Navigate to 'Closed captioning' and choose your preferred setting.
Closed captions can be turned on by simply hitting the * button on your Roku remote and then adjusting the caption settings from there.
