Just load 'em up, aim at the ground (preferably), and let it rip! Creates a good distraction for your sneaky moves.
Hit the 'C' key to choose the smoke shell, then fire like you would a regular shell. Easy peasy.
Tip: Remember, smoke shells are great for blocking enemy line of sight and retreating without getting blasted. Use them smartly!
