No, it鈥檚 not strictly backwards compatible. You need the re-released version to play it on Xbox 360.

Yes, GTA San Andreas is playable on the Xbox 360. It was re-released on the Xbox Live Marketplace with improved graphics, but you can also play the original Xbox version on your 360.
