In the original Japanese version, Hajime Isayama left Hange's gender ambiguous on purpose. This has led to wide acceptance of Hange as non-binary in the fan community.

Hange's gender is never confirmed in the anime or manga. They are often referred to using gender-neutral pronouns, so many fans consider Hange non-binary.
